A quick note to let everyone know how terrible my experience with FIDO was.
To make a long and painful story short, FIDO’s service has serious shortcomings. Firstly, they did not activate the package I asked for, so I had to call back to get the data services working. Once it was activated, they were not able to provide me with the correct GPRS settings to get access to the web on my phone. They told me my phone was defective, and there was nothing they could do. I actually had to guess what the settings were, and finally got it working after much fiddling about.
Then, the coverage was very spotty around my area and ended missing half the calls. The voicemail indicator sometimes did not alert me of a message for up to 12 hours! Their response: my phone is defective.
Before leaving for my trip, I made sure to call them to cancel the service. No contracts they say, but you have to wait until the end of the billing cycle to cancel, which in my case is June 21st. I asked for international roaming and figured great! I will have a phone while in the Netherlands. Sure enough, I get to Amsterdam and I can detect 5 networks, but cannot log on. I sent an email and it took 48 hours for them to respond and I got the standard: Your phone is not on the right band for Europe or is defective. Another couple of emails and suddenly my phone is not defective anymore and everything works fine.
Today is June 25th, and my service is still active! I’ve sent another email asking to cancel the service and take my credit card off their files, as I do not trust them anymore and have a feeling they will charge me for another month.
The bad news: Fido is owned by Rogers, and they are the only two GSM providers in Canada. This means that if you want a GSM phone, which in my opinion is the only way to go, you have to go through one of these idiotic companies. Rogers is holding Canada hostage.
I figure the sweetest revenge is telling everyone I know about my bad experience.
