Wanna stick out in China? Wear rollerblades!!!

I woke up to a sunny, hot and humid day, so I decided that it would be a great time to bust out my rollerblades and head to Tian’anmen Square, the largest square in the world. Right away, I noticed the amusement on everyone’s face, as if they had never seen someone wearing rollerblades before. I got many thumbs up and encouragements. There are bicycles lanes on every street and very smooth pavement, a bladder’s paradise! Bikes here only have one gear, so I am generally much faster than them. Also, since no one wears them here, there are no rules that say you can’t wear them in shops etc…

I had another mysterious lunch and decided to head for the largest electronics market in Beijing, which is literally 4 building, 10 storeys high, filled with small shops selling all kinds of gizmos. For a gadget loving person like me, it’s heaven! I didn’t realize how far it was, however, and it took me almost 3 hours to reach with me rollerblades. (great exercise, though) I browsed the different shops and purchased an 256mb MP3 player for about CAN$25. (only to figure out later that the drivers only work with Windows 98… grrrr)

I met a group composed of two Belgians, one English and a Chinese girlfriend. We shopped together for a while and then I joined them for some fantastic Korean BBQ. (again) We had our own little room and attendant, it was a lot of fun!) I then rollerbladed back to my hotel, for a total of 6-7 hours of exercise in one day. If it wasn’t for all the beer, I would be very slim right now…
